Plants in Estuaries
Pickleweed
Because estuaries are a mixture of fresh and salt water, the plants that live in estuaries need to be able to live in salty conditions. Plants can do this in various ways. One way that plants do this is to absorb the salt from the water and store it in there leaves, like the pickleweed does. Another way plants can do this is by pushing the salt from the water to the surface of the leaves, like the salt grass and alkali heath plants do, which makes little crystals of salt on the leaves. Estuaries are also made up of algae, seaweeds, and even Mangrove trees in tropical estuaries.
